Associations of the Pesticides Action Network Europe (PAN Europe) has released the results of a campaign analyzes performed on wines from Europe and around the world.
Let's start with the bad news: There is the contamination of these wines by widespread pesticide residues.
The 34 bottles of red, from intensive farming and conventional, all contain an average of over four different pesticide residues. Levels of contamination observed in these wines are considerably higher than permitted levels for pesticides in water, since we found in some wines tested amounts to more than 5800 times the maximum allowable concentrations (MAC) authorized pesticides in tap water!
This study provides evidence of the drift of certain practices in viticulture and only highlights the impact of very intensive use of pesticides. To know that 20% of pesticides used in agriculture are on the 3% of the agricultural area: the vines .
The good news: The study involved 40 bottles in all. 6 of them are from the farming . They contain no trace of pesticides with the exception of a bottle but at a minimum and certainly by contamination . Again, this study confirms what everyone in the wine is well known and explains the popularity of wine as consumers for organic wine .
So trust all those tenants who work respecting the earth and the vine, whether certified organic or they impose the same strict rules without wanting to support an additional administrative burden. And then there are those who go further as the proponents of biodynamics which can then be certified by Demeter for example.
It is by spending time with those tenants of natural wines that we understand their struggle for a new world of wine .
